For
thousands of years man has been fascinated with personality
and as far back as the ancient Greeks four distinct personality
traits emerged.
Brief History Lesson
Marston created the theory that behaviour
was a product of the individual's environment, in 1928. His
theory was based upon a scale from a favourable reaction to
the environment to an unfavourable or antagonistic reaction
to the environment. It is probably true that most people at
certain times do behave either favourably or unfavourably
towards their environment. So, further clarification was needed.
Hence in 1935 and 1951 Sullivan and Rogers respectively stated
that 'individuals' tend to 'adjust' their behaviour, or lifestyle
according to the reactions of those around them. This is part
of the formation of 'personality' and continues until such
time as the individual is comfortable, happy or accepting
of his personality or "image".
Lecky in 1945 went on to theorise that most of us work at
adjusting our self-image and work at maintaining the 'image'
through our behaviour. Sargin in 1945 and Super in 1957 also
went on to clarify that it is the creation of this image or
personality which becomes so important a part of some people
that they go on to search for a role, job or profession in
life which will keep up the image or personality that they
have created for themselves.
This in itself partly explains the complexity of the issue.
Personality may be a "man-made" creation in response
to the surrounding environment and other people's reactions
to the individual. The individual on the other hand is often
too young or even unaware of what he is creating in response
to these two factors - environment and other people's reactions.
Thus, because personality is inside the mind, inside the person
and isn't labelled up, packaged or visible, it is often not
fully understood by the individual concerned or those surrounding
him.
A child's personality is very complex and therefore challenging
to fully understand. The difficulty is that it is never static,
but constantly has potential to develop and change. A child's
personality is like water, it is constantly moving. However,
if it is given the chance to, it can develop every day into
something bigger, better and more wonderful.
Personality profiling -
commonly used in business, now used by those wishing to manage
children positively.
In recent times, personality/psychometric
profiles have dominated the business world, from assisting
management in motivating and selecting staff right through
to building successful teams.
But not until now has there been an accurate personality profile
designed specifically to understand a child's personality
- the key driver of all behaviours.
If you have ever wanted to know:
- How to manage a
child's behaviour positively
- How to really support
a child's needs
- How to enable a
child to perform at his or her best
- Why children behave
and react in certain ways
- Why a child is
attracted to certain children and not others
Then the BUTLER PROFILE is for you.
DON'T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT CHILDREN - UNDERSTAND THEM
You'll be amazed at the accuracy of the Butler Profile and
you'll also wonder how you ever managed without one!
